Bill Hayes was born in Bakersfield, California and received his BFA from San Diego State University and MFA from San Jose State University in California. He came to Colorado in 1970 and taught at Metropolitan State University for 22 years. Hayes’s paintings explore color and surface texture. He gessoes and sands the canvas until smooth, then applies a mixture of acrylic paint. With hand-held squeegees of various sizes, Hayes manipulates the paint across the canvas, resulting in the thin layers and lines apparent in the final work. Some of Hayes’s paintings have as many as 70 layers and generally take about one month to complete. He resides in Denver and his work has been exhibited in California and Michigan as well as Colorado.
