Józef Bakoś was born in Buffalo, NY, and studied at the Albright Art Gallery (today the Albright-Knox Art Gallery). There he met painter John E. Thompson who became his mentor and teacher and who would eventually encourage Bakoś to relocate to Colorado. In 1919 Bakoś taught at the University of Colorado in Boulder before moving to Santa Fe the following summer. In 1921 he helped form Los Cinco Pintores (The Five Painters), the first modernist artist collective in Santa Fe. From 1932 to 1934 he taught at the University of Denver School of Art.
