Wolfgang Hoffmann is the son of Josef Hoffmann, co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. Wolfgang Hoffmann was a resident designer with Howell Furniture Co. from 1934 to 1942. In 1936 he was granted a patent for this design of a leather armchair with a tubular chrome frame around the exterior. Howell Furniture had been producing tubular steel frames for furniture since 1929, trademarked “Chromsteel,” but it is Hoffmann’s designs that took this innovative technique to the next level.
