Born near Cleveland, Ohio, Edward Marecak studied at and graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1942, followed by brief study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art before serving in the Army during World War II in the Aleutians. He moved to Colorado and attended the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (CSFAC) from 1946 to 1950 to study under Boardman Robinson, whom he had met at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He briefly returned to Cranbrook Academy in autumn 1947. Also that year he married a fellow student at the CSFAC, ceramist Donna Fortin, with whom he had two sons. During the summer of 1949, he made 133 lithographs while working with the master printmaker Lawrence Barrett at the CSFAC. From 1953 to1955 he took educational courses at the University of Denver and subsequently taught at Denver’s George Washington High School from 1957 to 1982, along with ceramist Mark Zamantakis. Marecak’s parents were Slovakian and the folk tales of his heritage often influenced the subject matter of his paintings and lithographs.
