Dorothea Greene Dunlop was born September 30, 1913 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. She grew up in Colorado and attended the University of Denver and then the Art Institute of Chicago. Dunlop worked for a short time as a social worker (her first degree) and then as a wife and mother of two children before pursuing a career in art. Her hallmark was welding found-metal objects together into abstract sculptural pieces. She was influenced by Wilbert Verhelst, who studied and taught in Denver and was known for his experimental sculpture.
