James Lovera was born in California in 1920 and studied at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Originally hoping to study painting, he was attracted to ceramics because of the possibilities with glazes and because of his introduction to famed potters Gertrud & Otto Natzler. In 1945 he began working as a researcher at the California Pottery Company to test glazes. He then went on to teach at San Jose State University from 1948–1986.
Lovera is best known for his highly textured crater glazes as seen in this bowl.
