Born in Flint, Michigan, Craig Marshall Smith received both his BA and MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles. Abstract expressionist Richard Diebenkorn was his painting instructor. After graduating, Smith joined the faculty of Metropolitan State College (now MSU, Denver) in 1977 and continued to teach until 2003 when he retired as a Professor Emeritus. He has also taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Arizona State University and Arapahoe Community College. He considers himself an abstract expressionist, and has exhibited at the Museum of Outdoor Art, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and the University of Northern Colorado, among others.
