Gertrud & Otto Natzler met in Vienna in 1934. Gertrud was studying ceramics and shifted Otto’s interest, who was working in textile design, to clay. They worked within their own individual strengths to create pieces as a team, Gertrud throwing the delicate shapes and Otto glazing them. They emigrated from Austria to California in 1938 and enjoyed international fame. By the time of Gertud’s death in 1971 they had created 25,000 works and Otto had developed 2,500 glazes. Otto continued to work until his death in 2007.
