Designer Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964, Dutch)
Manufacturer Gerard van de Groenekan, de Bilt, Netherlands
Media painted beech wood
Dimensions 41 x 78 3/4 x 17 3/4 inches
The original oak sideboard of this design was purchased by architect Piet Elling. Unfortunately it was destroyed in a fire. This particular sideboard is painted beech wood and is the second reproduction to be completed in the 1960s by Rietveld’s furniture builder, Gerard van de Groenekan. The first reproduction is in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The piece is more traditionally functional than some of Rietveld’s other furniture, but its angularity and weightlessness represent the De Stijl movement for which Rietveld is known.
