Carlos Frésquez was born in 1956 and is a Denver native. He received his BA from Metropolitan State College in Denver (now Metropolitan State University of Denver) in 1980 and his MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1995. He returned to Metro to teach and became a full-time professor there in 2005. Frésquez’ early work was inspired by the Chicano civil rights movement of the 1960s and he is known today for culturally inspired paintings, murals and set designs. He has exhibited worldwide and  was included in the first exhibition of Chicano Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1992. Frésquez received the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation’s Artist Award in 2018.
