Martha Daniels was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1943. She studied at New York’s Cooper Union from 1961–1964 and received a BA in ceramics from Metropolitan State University in 1975. For several years in the 1960s Daniels lived and worked in Greece where she discovered her affinity for making large sculptural ceramic pieces. Daniels invented a unique way to make large, portable pieces. She first hand-builds and alters smaller segments of her sculptures and fires them individually. Then she assembles the segments together, creating one final sculpture. This triangular tower was fired in four sections. Daniels settled in Colorado in the late 1960s and created a large body of work in the state, which she exhibited widely. In 2000 she mounted a large site-specific creation titled Grotto at the Denver Art Museum. In 2005 the Colorado Department of Transportation commissioned her to create an enormous tile mural, Currents and Eddies, at the Washington Street underpass of I-70 in Denver. Daniels has studied and exhibited with many other ceramic artists in Kirkland Museum’s collection including Rodger Lang, Nan and James McKinnell, Betty Woodman, Maynard Tischler and Paul Soldner. Daniels now resides in California.
