Ilonka Karasz was born in Hungary and moved to the US in 1913. She had a prolific career and designed objects in many media including furniture, metal, textiles and wallpaper. She is perhaps best known for her cover illustrations for the New Yorker magazine which featured colorful views of life in New York City.
Chairs like this one were designed for the American Designers’ Gallery exhibition in 1928 and 1929. She was the only woman charged with designing an entire room for the exhibition and ended up completing a studio apartment and a nursery.
