The wood, copper and mother-of-pearl inlay on this bookcase first appeared in a chair designed by Ernest Archibald Taylor for the Wylie and Lochhead pavilion at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901, which showcased international art and design. The flared crown molding overhanging the top of the bookcase is characteristic of Glasgow Style, as is the heavy metal hardware, elongated profile and the curved cutouts on the sides of the bookcase. The stylized floral inlay is a common element in Taylor’s designs.
