Beverly Rosen was born September 9, 1924 near Boston, Massachusetts. She won a scholarship in 1941 to Simmons College and studied home economics, which promised job opportunities for young women. In 1944 she married Bernie Rosen who worked in insurance and encouraged her in her art endeavors. She followed Bernie to his posts in Utah and California while he was in the Army during World War II and when they settled back in Massachusetts, Rosen herself served in the American Red Cross. In 1951 the Rosens moved to Denver and Beverly pursued formal art education. She took classes with Bob Prost at the University of Colorado’s Denver Center before applying to the graduate program in art at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She had four children under the age of 10 and was rejected from the program. She applied to the MFA program at the University of Denver (DU) and was accepted. She was a student of Vance Kirkland’s and he gave her a job before she graduated. She eventually became the first woman to gain tenure in DU’s art department. Rosen sculpted, painted and often wrote poems to complement her paintings. She and Bernie also opened a gallery in Denver, St. Charles on Wazee, to promote and exhibit Colorado art. They also helped found and promote the D.C. Burns Sculpture Park in Denver.
