(James) Duard Marshall was born in 1914 Springfield, Missouri, though he spent much of his time in Arkansas and Oklahoma as a child. Some of Marshall’s teachers included acclaimed artists such as Thomas Hart Benton and Boardman Robinson. Notable as a painter, lithographer, woodblock printer and writer, Marshall worked primarily in landscapes. He taught drawing and painting, and was recognized for his work in art conservation and illustration during his lifetime. Marshall later was an original member of the 15 Colorado Artists, with Vance Kirkland, who split from the Denver Artists’ Guild in 1948 in pursuit of a more progressive modern art agenda. His work has been shown in the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art and the Denver Art Museum. Marshall died in Lumberton, New Jersey in 2010.
