Henry Lowenstein, a performing arts advocate, was born in Berlin, Germany on July 4, 1925. During World War II he escaped to London as part of the Kindertransport and then immigrated to the United States in 1947. He worked as an illustrator for the Air Force and attended Yale University’s graduate school in set design before settling in Denver. He ran the community Bonfils Theater, later renamed the Lowenstein Theater, and attracted acting celebrities to Denver’s local theatre productions. The Colorado Theatre Guild gives out annual Henry Awards, in honor of Lowenstein and his lasting impact on Denver’s theatrical scene. Lowenstein’s set designs had never been displayed before they came to Kirkland Museum. Work by his mother, Maria Lowenstein, is also part of Kirkland Museum’s collection.
