Artist John Fudge (1940–1999, American)

Media oil on canvas

Dimensions 30 x 36 inches

John Fudge was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1940 and moved to Denver as a child. He received his BFA from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1963, and his MFA in 1966.  He spent most of his life in the Denver area and taught at the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) from 1970 to 1991. One visitor to Kirkland Museum recalled having Fudge as an instructor at UCD between 1973 to 1977; he said Fudge would read classic novels to his students as they worked in a very polished speaking voice and with voices for all of the characters. The artist’s blend of humor and Surrealism created paintings not easy to define; he once said, “I want to give the viewer something to think about as well as something to look at. I want to serve up a meal, not just a glass of water.” Fudge exhibited widely before his death in Lakewood, Colorado in 1999. In addition to Kirkland Museum and the Denver Art Museum, his work can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in many public and private collections.
