Amy Metier was born in Wyoming, grew up in Colorado and has been painting since the age of 12. She received her BFA from Colorado State University in 1975 and her MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1979. A former Professor of Fine Arts at Metropolitan State University of Denver, Metier resides in Boulder, Colorado, but maintains a studio in Denver. Metier’s abstract paintings are in collections throughout the United States and Europe and have been exhibited widely. She has participated in artist residencies at Vermont Studio Center, the American Academy in Rome, Italy and in Brittany, France. Primarily an oil painter, Metier also works in printmaking, collage and water media on paper. She always works on several paintings at a time, and creates a new body of work for each solo exhibition. Metier has said that her paintings illustrate, “that tension between wanting to create an image and not create an image.”
