Richard H. Tallant was born in Zanesville, Ohio and then moved to Colorado to try his hand at mining. He joined the Denver Art Club from 1886 to 1887. Tallant is known for his painted scenes of the West including Estes Park, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Tallant lived for a few years in Salt Lake City, Utah and painted landscapes there. He eventually settled and remained in Estes Park, Colorado in the area known as Devil’s Gulch where he served as the Justice of the Peace, earning the nickname “Judge Tallant”. Many of his landscape paintings were commissioned in Estes Park by F. O. Stanley of the famed Stanley Hotel.
