Betty Woodman was born in 1930 in Norwalk, Connecticut. She attended Alfred University from 1948 to 1950. Woodman lived for a time in Colorado, teaching at the University of Colorado Boulder along with her husband George Woodman, also an artist and teacher. Later she traveled and lived in Italy where she garnered inspiration for many of her pieces. Woodman often experimented with the ceramic vessel form in unique ways, eventually using bright colors and joining and interlocking pieces of clay together to create new forms. Her late work often included large-scale installations made of clay, sometimes combined with paintings. Woodman passed away January 2, 2018 at the age of 87. Woodman’s pieces reside in many museum collections and have been included in solo exhibitions all over the world.
