Nadine Kent Drummond was born September 2, 1912 in Trinidad, Colorado. She attended East High School in Denver and graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs in 1934. College provided her the opportunity to study and work with well-known artists such as Boardman Robinson, Arnold Blanch and Adolph Dehn. Drummond was also mentored by German Expressionist Max Beckmann at the University of Colorado in Boulder, about 1941. Drummond completed a mural for the Federal Government during the 1930s. She belonged to an artists’ club in San Francisco and in the early 1950s she became a member of the avant-garde modernist group 15 Colorado Artists. Drummond taught landscape and life painting at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and exhibited widely throughout the United States, winning prizes at the Nebraska Six States exhibition and elsewhere. She was chosen as one of twelve women artists of the West for an exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris and was awarded the prestigious Silver Medal of Paris in 1951. Drummond suffered the death of one of her sons, the early death of her husband in 1961 and separation from her only other son, who was sent to the Vietnam War. Drummond then passed away at the young age of 54 in 1966. For her relatively short life, Drummond was a pioneer in expressionist and modern art in Colorado.
