Henry Arthur Elkins was born in Vershire, Vermont on May 30, 1847. His family moved to Chicago when he was nine. Elkins first came to Colorado in his late teens with a group of artists. He enjoyed traveling and painting in the West, especially in Colorado and California. During his short life, Elkins lived in Chicago, Kansas City and Colorado. The last days of his life were spent traveling back to Colorado from Kansas City. He had intended to travel to both California and Mexico with his family, when he sadly succumbed to a fever in Georgetown, Colorado at the young age of 37. His short life was not short of accolades: his painting Mount Shasta was shown in Vienna and he also received an honor at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.
