Robert Karl Behrens was born on May 12, 1939 in Teaneck, New Jersey. Behrens received artistic training from the Pratt Institute School of Architecture in New York and the Kansas City Art Institute, where he received a BA in industrial design and sculpture in 1965. Graduating with a MA in sculpture from the University of Denver in 1972, he then studied landscape architecture at the University of Wisconsin’s Graduate School of Environmental Design. Behrens moved to Sonoma, California in 1986 and was the principal designer of the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park. Finding inspiration in ruins, he visited Greece, Italy and the Yucatan. Behrens was best known for his public art and landscape design, with a career spanning 34 years. In Denver, he is responsible for creating the shade shelters at the Cherry Creek State Recreation Area.
