Al Wynne was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on January 3, 1922. He studied with Boardman Robinson at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado at a young age, and later at the University of Denver before serving in the Air Force during World War II. After the war he briefly returned to the University of Denver, and then received his BA at Iowa Wesleyan College in 1948 and his MA at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1952. Wynne taught art at Iowa Wesleyan and Colorado College and, with his wife Lou, a recognized Colorado ceramist, established the first two years of art courses for credit at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, which were held at the Wynne Studio in the Black Forest. Calligraphy served as an inspiration to Wynne as a boy and calligraphic influence can be seen in the brush strokes of many of his paintings. His paintings and sculptures have appeared in more than 50 group exhibitions and 25 solo exhibitions and are included in over 50 public and private collections worldwide. Tragically, the majority of the Wynnes’ lifetime artistic output burned with their home and studio in the Black Forest Fire of June 2013, making the works preserved in collections such as at Kirkland Museum especially important.
