John F. Carlson was born in 1875 in Sweden and immigrated 12 years later to Buffalo, New York with his family. He studied at the Albright School and the Art Students League in New York. He spent a majority of his career and life in Woodstock, New York, teaching at the Art Students League summer school and eventually opening his own school, the John F. Carlson School of Landscape Painting. He was invited to the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado (precursor to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center) as director and painting instructor for two summers in 1920 and 1921. Carlson is well-regarded for his winter landscape paintings.
