After his MFA he moved back to Texas to teach at the University of Houston and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He briefly moved to New York City and Baltimore before settling in Denver in 1973. In Denver Bernier continued teaching, primarily to senior citizens. He was given exhibitions at the Denver Art Museum and at Robischon Gallery, Spark Gallery and Walker Fine Art among other venues in Denver and beyond.
