Allen Tupper True was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on May 30, 1881. After a year at the University of Denver, True left Colorado to study art at the Corcoran Art School in Washington, D.C. from 1901 to 1902, and then at the Howard Pyle School in Wilmington, Delaware and Chadd’s Ford, Pennsylvania, from 1902 to 1907. During the fall of 1908, True apprenticed for artist Frank Brangwyn in London, and would later collaborate on murals for the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco and for the Missouri State Capitol. True returned to Colorado in 1909 and completed several murals at Denver Public Library branches, including Commerce of the Prairies which is now located in the Western History Department of Denver’s Central Public Library. He was prominently involved with Denver’s City Beautiful movement, instituted by Mayor Robert Speer, and in 1920, he completed The Buffalo, The Elk, The Prospector and The Trapper for Denver’s Civic Center. True continued painting murals into the 1950s, including commissions for the Brown Palace Hotel, the Colorado State Hospital Psychiatric Department in Pueblo, Colorado, the University of Denver, The Denver District and County Court Rooms and the University of Colorado Students Union. The Denver Art Museum opened a solo exhibition of True’s works in 1947. Allen Tupper True died in Denver on November 1, 1955, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
