Hugh Edward Weller was born July 27, 1898 in Eaton, Colorado. Weller painted scenery at Elitch Gardens and the Denham Theatre before studying with George Bellows at the Chicago Art Institute. In the 1920s he taught at the Denver Art Academy. Weller painted a mural in the Capitol Annex in Denver and a mural in East High School’s library, which was for the federal government’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the 1930s. Weller also had a studio in Grand Lake, Colorado and lived and worked for a while in both New Orleans and Southern California. Many of Weller’s abstract paintings in Kirkland Museum’s collection, including this one, have a cubist flare.
