George Vander Sluis was born in Cleveland, OH, and attended the Cleveland Institute of Art. From 1940 to 1942 he taught at the Broadmoor Art Academy (which became the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center or CSFAC) before serving in World War II as part of the Ghost Army, contributing his artistic talent to this US Army deception unit. Following the war he returned to teach at the CSFAC before leaving Colorado in 1947 to continue his career in education at Syracuse University, where he taught painting and drawing. In 1970 he was named associate dean of the School of Arts at Syracuse.
