Born in Philadelphia in 1947, Maitland began painting in oils at the age of 12. She is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she received the Catherine Grant Memorial Prize in 1968 for her painting Still Life with a Side of Bacon. She moved to Boulder soon after a visit there in 1970 and still calls it home. She was a founder of the Front Range Women in the Visual Arts group in the 1970s and has taught at Colorado institutions including Naropa University and Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Maitland’s travels and short residences in England, Italy, Mexico, Maui, Costa Rica and New York City have had a large influence on her work.
