Sam Maloof was part of the modern American Studio Craft Movement after World War II. Not to be confused with the earlier Arts & Crafts Movement from which it drew inspiration, designers of the Studio Craft Movement were involved in the creation by hand of their designs. The movement mixed the craftsmanship of furniture making and pottery throwing with a modern aesthetic such as rounded, organic and natural shapes. Maloof designed rocking chairs for the White House during the Carter administration. He considered himself a woodworker. His legacy and designs live on at the California-based Sam Maloof Woodworker Inc. This walnut end table (Maloof’s favorite choice of material) displays his distinctive fluid, soft, curved and rounded design.
