Joel Mosko was born February 12, 1912 in Warsaw, Poland. He was a doctor, artist and an avid supporter and promoter of arts and culture. In the 1930s he gained medical training and qualifications in France. During World War II he joined the French Army Medical Corps; he was then briefly captured by the Nazis, escaped and made his way to the United States. He continued the war effort by serving in the United States Army. Once the war was over, he lived and worked in Denver, Colorado as a doctor, primarily at St. Anthony and Rose Memorial hospitals. Mosko was an avid supporter of the arts and despite his full time job as a doctor he also focused on bolstering the art scene in Denver. He founded both the Community Art Gallery and Beaux Arts Gallery in Denver. He also painted, sculpted and studied with artists Angelo di Benedetto and Edgar Britton. Mosko had two one-man shows in Denver in the 1980s and gained awards for his service in France and as a physician in Denver. This is a bronze casting made from Mosko’s carved balsa wood sculpture, also in Kirkland Museum’s collection.
