Born in Chicago, Francis Drexel Smith studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. He became an avid supporter of the Broadmoor Art Academy and later the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, serving as a committee member, board member and trustee. He studied with renowned landscape painter John Carlson in Colorado Springs and was known for his paintings of Colorado landscapes and scenery. Smith was a founding member of the Denver Artists Guild in 1928.
