Bernard Leach is known as the “Father of British studio pottery.” He studied with Urano Shigekichi (Kenzan VI) in Tokyo and learned throwing, brushwork decoration and different firing methods. He later developed his own style based on traditional Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English slipware. In 1920 he left Japan for England with his friend and future business partner Hamada Shoji. In the town of St. Ives they launched the celebrated Leach Pottery. Many potters have trained at the famed pottery, helping shape studio pottery in Britain and the West for generations.
