Mark Dickson was born in Boulder, CO, and at a young age gained an interest in art from his father, who owned a printing company in Denver. He studied at Metropolitan State College of Denver, receiving his BA degree in 1969. In 1970 Dickson attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and then received his MFA from the University of Denver in 1973. In the 1980s Dickson was the director of humanities and the assistant professor of art at St. Thomas Seminary College in Denver. When the school closed, he was able to use his termination pay to start pursuing a career as a full-time artist.
