Mary Chenoweth was born April 17, 1918 in Oklahoma and moved with her family to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she spent much of her childhood. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Pratt Institute in New York City before earning a BFA in 1950 from the University of Denver where Vance Kirkland was a mentor. After receiving her MFA from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1953, she was hired by Emerson Woelffer to teach at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. In 1957, the school closed and became the art department at Colorado College, where Chenoweth remained until her 1983 retirement. She traveled to many places across the globe, and these journeys became inspiration for much of her artwork. She was a member of Denver’s modernist art group, the 15 Colorado Artists. Chenoweth was a force in abstract art and an influence on many Colorado artists such as Dale Chisman and Emilio Lobato.
