II. Surrealism. Kirkland had been listening to the radio and the tone poem Isle of the Dead by Sergei Rachmaninoff had come on and it inspired him to do this painting. Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin had done a series of paintings in the 1880s on this theme, but Kirkland thought that Colorado should have its own isle of the dead, too.
