Born in Cambridge, Kansas, Tatum initially studied education, receiving degrees from A&M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma and Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas. She moved to Denver in 1950 and began to study art with Walt Green at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School, followed by four years of study with Charles Waldo Love. She was president of the Denver Artists Guild from 1974-1975.
